The University of Missouri-Columbia
(MU) founded in 1839, is the oldest public university west of the
Mississippi. The student population averages 24,000 -- about 6,000
of whom are enrolled in graduate or professional schools. MU is
one of the nation's most complete institutions of higher education,
with its 18 schools or colleges on a single campus. As would be
expected at a Research 1 university, there are high-quality library,
computing, cultural, and recreational facilities available for all
students and faculty.
The charming brick-and-limestone
campus is in Columbia, a city of around 80,000 permanent residents.
Columbia is midway between two larger cities, St. Louis and Kansas
City, that are within a two hour drive. According to standardized
rating systems, such as those published annually in Money magazine,
Columbia ranks among the top 5 best places to live in the United
States. Among the factors that contribute to these ratings are good
quality public schools, low crime and pollution levels, and a rich
array of entertainment opportunities, many of which are available
on the MU campus. These opportunities include music, theater, art,
dance and competitive athletics provided by the University and by
the city's two private colleges. The downtown area hosts a renowned
restaurant, bar and dance-club district. Outdoor enthusiasts will
enjoy the camping and canoeing on pristine rivers in the nearby
Ozark Plateau. Nature trails, caves, parks, streams and the beautiful
Missouri River all lie within a 15-minute drive from campus.
